How do solar water heaters function ?
The majority of your daily household hot water needs can be met by solar water heating systems. Systems for heating water with solar energy include solar collectors and storage tanks. Active solar water heating systems, which feature circulating pumps and controls, and passive systems, which don't, are the two different types of solar water heating systems.
Active Solar Water Heaters
With active solar water heaters, hot water is transferred from the solar collectors, or absorbers, to your residence using a pump. As the water is held in a tank that can be kept indoors to prevent freezing, these are typically placed in regions with cooling weather.
There are two different types of active solar water heaters :
1. Active direct systems :
Systems that heat water directly in collectors before distributing it to your taps and shower heads are called active direct systems. Typically, the solar collectors are tubes made of glass or metal.
2. Active indirect systems :
In active indirect systems, heat is transferred from the solar collectors to a heat transfer fluid, such as propylene glycol, which is then transferred to the water supply via a heat exchanger in a closed-loop system. While the transfer fluid cycles the system, some heat is lost.
Passive solar water heaters
Pumps that circulate hot water are not used by passive solar water heaters. Instead, they use convection, a system of water circulation in which hotter water rises to the surface and colder water sinks.
In general, passive solar water system are less expensive than active ones because they don't need specialized machinery to pump water.
There are two different types of active solar water heaters :
1. Integral collector solar water heaters :
Large storage tanks for black water are used in integral collector solar water heaters, which are enclosed in a box and have a transparent top to let light in. When you need hot water, your plumbing system receives the heated water that was originally stored in the black tanks.
2. Passive thermosyphon systems :
In active indirect systems, heat is transferred from the solar collectors to a heat transfer fluid, such as propylene glycol, which is then transferred to the water supply via a heat exchanger in a closed-loop system. While the transfer fluid cycles the system, some heat is lost.
1. Active direct systems :
Systems that heat water directly in collectors before distributing it to your taps and shower heads are called active direct systems. Typically, the solar collectors are tubes made of glass or metal.
2. Active indirect systems :
On your roof, passive thermosyphon systems heat water in tiny batches using metal flat plate collectors. When your hot water valves are opened, hot water from the batch collectors at the top of your roof rushes down to your faucets. These are typically made to hold 40 gallons of water.
A tankless heater, which can be either gas or electric, is frequently used in passive systems as a backup energy source.
Storage Tanks and Solar Collectors
Most solar water heaters need a storage tank that is well-insulated. An extra outlet and inlet are connected to and from the collector by solar storage tanks. The solar water heater in two-tank systems warms the water before it enters the traditional water heater. In one-tank systems, the backup heater and solar storage are merged in a single tank.
Flat-plate collectors (FPC)
Best Solar Water Heater is a device, which heats the water by solar radiation, consisting of a Flat Plate Collector & insulated Storage Tank. In Flat Plate Collector Solar radiation is passed through cover plate (Toughened glass), which is absorbed by the Copper Absorber and converted into heat and it passes to the water inside the absorber tube. Thus water gets heated by solar radiation. Hot water is stored in an insulated Hot Water Storage Tank from which we can utilize hot water as and when we require it. Mostly the water heating system is working on the greenhouse effect and thermosyphon principle. These solar systems are renewable energy resources products and available at a fair price in our company. Contact Us to know more about our service and consultation.
Evacuated-tube solar collectors : ( ESC )
They have rows of translucent glass tubes arranged in parallel. Each tube has a fin and a metal absorber tube linked to the glass outer tube. The fin's covering traps solar energy while preventing heat escape through radiation. In commercial applications in the United States, these collectors are more typically used.
A backup system is nearly always needed for cloudy days and periods of high demand when using solar water heating systems. Traditional storage water heaters often serve as a fallback and could be included in the solar system bundle. The solar collector may also include a backup system, such as rooftop tanks with thermosyphon devices. An integral-collector storage system can be combined with a tankless or demand-type water heater for backup because it already stores hot water in addition to capturing solar heat.
Integral collector-storage systems ( ICS )
The simplest solar water heating system is an integral collector storage (ICS) system, which uses the heat collector as well as a water storage tank. Although highly effective, they only function in regions where there is little danger of freezing cold. A sizable black tank or a network of smaller copper tubes affixed to a roof are examples of rudimentary ICS systems. Due to the greater surface area, ICS units with copper tubing heat up more quickly and cool down more quickly.
Applications of Solar Water Heater
Hot water from Solar Hot Water System can be utilized for Bathing, Cooking, Washing etc in domestic Sector, and for Preheating of Boiler feed water up to 80°C, Washing & Cleaning of vessels, Sterilizing Process, Pasteurization Process in dairy industries. Same can also utilized in other industries like Textiles, Editable oil and refining, Breweries, Pharmaceuticals - drug manufacturing Units, Electroplating / Galvanizing Unit, Paint Shops, Pulp and Paper Industries, Soft drink bottling plant and also Hot water at 60° C to 80° C for hostels, Hospitals, restaurants, dairies, homes, industries etc. Contact us for your industry specific solar products needs.

Solar water heaters are cost comparative in many applications, when you calculate account for the total energy cost over the life of the system. Approximate life of the solar water heating system is 15-20 year. Although the initial cost of the solar water heaters is higher than conventional water heaters, but the fuel (solar radiation) is free. A 100 liters per day capacity SWHS can replace an electric geyser for residential use and saves 1,435 units of electricity annually. The return on investment has become increasingly attractive with the increase in prices of conventional energy. The payback period will be around:
- 1.5-2.5 years when electricity is replaced
- 3-4 years when furnace oil is replaced
- 3-4 year when coal replaced
